BreakingModern — In its 77th year, the NCAA tournament has provided hundreds of magical moments. Here’s what I say are the three best March Madness moments ever.
The first one I show you, in the BreakingModern Sports episode below, is from North Carolina’s 1983 win against a heavily-favored Houston. Check out how Lorenzo Charles catches Dereck Whittenburg’s airball and dunks it in — just as time expires. The No. 6 seeded Wolfpack went on to win that 1983 national championship in a dramatic fashion. And I love that moment where head coach Jim Valvano runs around the court looking for someone to hug.

So awesome. I don’t think anyone would argue that the 1979 NCAA finals game between Michigan State and Indiana State pretty much changed the modern era of basketball.
To this day it remains the highest-rated game in the history of college basketball. In that tournament, Magic’s Spartans beat Bird’s previously unbeaten Sycamores 75-64. This ignited the legendary rivalry between Magic and Bird that moved on to and transcended the NBA in the 1980s.
Finally, there’s the memorable moment that stands alone at the top of all the March Madness ever, in my opinion. As you can see above, that moment came in 1992 in the form of one Christian Laettner. In what many consider the greatest college basketball game ever played, Duke beat Kentucky 104-103 in overtime to advance to the Final Four.
As for Laettner, he finished off a perfect 20 for 20 combined shooting day, from the field and then from the free throw line with the most improbable of shots with just 2.1 seconds left. It’s an iconic highlight that sits atop our most memorable March Madness Moments.
